Real Estate

Testing guidelines for real estate transactions are different than standard testing.  There are two options:
1. Take one short-term test using a calibrated continuous radon monitor(CRM), with hourly readings, for at least 48 hours. The results are analyzed the same day the test ends. This is the best method for real estate testing.
2. Take two short-term tests, placed 6-12 inches apart, at the same time in the same location for at least 48 hours.  The kits are sent to the lab for analysis and the two results are averaged.
• Radon Relief uses approved continuous radon monitors (CRMs), with hourly readings, for real estate testing.  CRMs have the ability to detect interference and tampering, thereby providing reliable results.

Homeowners

An initial, short-term test is recommended as the first step in testing. A short-term test runs from 2 to 90 days, depending on the device. Short-term tests offer a quick “screening” for radon.
• Radon Relief uses professional continuous radon monitors(CRMs), with hourly readings, and occasionally charcoal test kits for short-term testing.
*Note: The S.C. DHEC’s Radon Program offers free, short-term radon test kits for homeowners. Tests are not available for real estate transactions. For more information, go to www.scdhec.gov/environment/behs/Radon/index.htm.  All other testing seeHomes, Apartments, Commercial & Schools.
